CRD – EQ And Effects

EQ and Effects.

The next stage of the mixing was equalisation and effects Essential to the final mix, there are two types of EQ, corrective and creative. We used corrective EQ to alter the drums and give them more presence around 70hz. This was achieved by emphasising certain frequencies of the bass drum so it cuts through the mix. We did consider Parallel compression on the drums, but felt this sound would be too modern, almost too controlled.

One effect on the track was to pan Perins whisper vocals to the left the right for the other. This created the unnerving effect of passing through the speakers. Suggesting a ghostly voice, which was perfect for Jonny’s Dead.

Going through these processes we found, that we tended to complicate the track, largely through inexperience and it was key to constantly examine the raw sound and compare versions, until we were happy. The entire process was the elements of control we had over the process. As we learnt more the more control we had over the overall process and the better the finished recording.

The audio succeeds in taking a track and producing it to sound cleaner, tight and above all more dynamic in tonality. Listening to the various examples along the process it demonstrates how the production still very much resembles the original song yet adds to it’s audio texture.
