CRD – The Cleaning/Editing Process.
The Cleaning/Editing Process.
Once the session was over we meticulously went through all the tracks to delete, breaths, gaps in playing and mistakes. For example isolating tom hits. Whilst time consuming this allowed us more headroom in the mix, and left room for parts that needed to cut through such as the vocals. This gave us good control of the track. At first we edited the lead vocal to create a tighter track, however through our lessons we discovered that by using a vocal compressor, we could put more emotion into the track by making the breaths the same volume as the vocal. This technique is used largely in Pop music production.
Our goal was largely to create space for the various elements of the song. By using techniques such as panning. For example we panned both guitars on the track to give room for Spencer vox to cut through the mix. However we tried not to become too reliant on panning as the target destination for the song was local and national commercial radio, which is still largely mono and some subtly would be lost. Other methods to create this space included: Groups/Buses And Corrective EQ.
Groups/Buses/EQ
Putting tracks into groups enables you to quickly control the sound and volume of certain sections. We put the drums and the overhead mics into a drum-group to control the volume and to add a peak limiter, with some inconsistencies of sound.
